Kenya’s contingent to the 25th Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan (November 15–26, 2025) has been streamlined to ensure strategic focus, optimal preparation, and a strong medal campaign.
Initially set to compete in 12 disciplines, Team Kenya will now feature in five key sports — athletics, swimming, women’s basketball, men’s handball, and golf — representing the country’s best prospects and experience on the global stage.
According to Team Kenya CEO Duncan Kuria, the decision, reached after consultations with the Ministry of Sports, was guided by budgetary realities and performance data — not by lack of faith in the excluded teams.
“This was one of the most difficult decisions we’ve had to make,”
said Kuria.
“It was purely a financial decision, not a question of ability. Every athlete and team has worked hard, but we had to focus on those with proven international experience to ensure a strong representation.”
Despite the adjustments, optimism remains high within the camp. Chef de Mission Bernard Banja emphasized that the athletes’ spirit remains unbroken.
“We are working with a lean budget, but our determination is stronger than ever,”
Banja stated.
“These athletes have continued training with focus and discipline, ready to make Kenya proud in Tokyo.”
Kenya will now be represented by 177 athletes who have officially entered residential training camp at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The mood at camp is one of unity, resilience and renewed energy — embodying the very essence of the Deaflympic spirit.
“The Deaflympics are not just about medals,”
added Kuria.
“They are about showcasing talent, inspiring inclusion, and proving that Kenya’s Deaf athletes belong at the highest level of competition.”
As preparations intensify, Team Kenya Deaf stands poised to write another proud chapter in Kenya’s Deaflympics history — carrying with them the hopes of an entire nation and the dreams of those who paved the way.
