Teen Golf Sensation Jacinta Njeri Poised to Make Deaflympics History in Tokyo 2025

At just 19 years old, Jacinta Njeri, a Form Two student at Ngala Secondary School for the Deaf in Nakuru County, is about to make history as Kenya’s first-ever female golfer to compete at the 25th Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan (November 15–26, 2025).

With her powerful swing and quiet confidence, Njeri is already inspiring the next generation of Deaf athletes. Having shone in local championships, she’s ready to tee off on the global stage alongside experienced golfers Isaac Makokha, Gilbert Alikula and Adan Wario.

“Being the first woman in the Kenya Deaf team to go to the Deaflympics makes me very proud,”

said Njeri.

“When I go to Tokyo, my goal is to play well and bring home a gold medal.”

Njeri hopes her appearance will inspire more women — especially those with hearing impairments — to take up golf. Her journey began in 2022 under the guidance of Vet Lab Sports Club resident pro Shem Orwenyo, who encouraged her to pursue the sport seriously.

The handicap 20 player currently trains at top Nairobi courses, including Railways, Muthaiga, and Vet Lab, balancing golf with her schoolwork and other sports like volleyball and basketball.

“Golf helps me relax and connect with my fellow players,” she shared. “It’s a sport that makes me happy and proud.” Backed by Experience and Mentorship

Kenya’s Deaflympic bronze medalist Isaac Makokha, who made history at the 2022 Deaflympics in Brazil, has been mentoring Njeri closely.

“She has everything it takes to get on the podium,” Makokha noted. “Her swing, focus and attitude are world-class.”

Team Kenya golf coach David Kihara echoed that confidence.

“Njeri is young, strong, and dedicated. She has great potential and is ready for the challenge in Tokyo,” said Kihara. “We’re confident that some medals are coming home.”

As the countdown to Tokyo 2025 continues, Njeri stands as a symbol of possibility — proving that with passion, guidance, and opportunity, barriers can be broken and history can be made.
