National Hero Sharon Bitok Targets Gold at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics

Nairobi, Kenya — From finishing last in her debut race to becoming a triple silver medalist and now chasing gold, Sharon Bitok’s journey to the Tokyo 2025 Summer Deaflympics (November 15–26) is nothing short of remarkable.

The 29-year-old from Iten, Eldoret, made her international debut at the 2021 World Deaf Athletics Championships in Lublin, Poland, where she struggled to keep up in the 800m and 1500m races. But that experience lit a fire in her.

Just a year later, at the 24th Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, Bitok returned stronger — and shocked the world by winning three silver medals in the women’s 800m, 1500m, and 4x400m relay.

“In Poland, I was scared and inexperienced. But in Brazil, I found my rhythm — and the silvers gave me belief,”

she recalled.

Now, with Tokyo 2025 around the corner, Bitok’s sights are set on turning silver into gold.

“This time around, I want gold in both the 800m and 1500m. I’m training harder and smarter, and I believe the dream will come true,”

she said.

Bitok is currently working on her speed for the 800m while fine-tuning endurance for the 1500m. Despite limited resources, she remains unfazed.

“My opponents in Europe may have better facilities, but I’ve done my homework. Let’s meet on the track and see how it ends,”

said Bitok, who also works as a hairstylist in Eldoret.

Her resilience was recently recognized when President William Ruto named her among Kenya’s national heroes during the 2024 Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui.

Beyond athletic glory, Bitok’s motivation is deeply personal — securing a brighter future for her family.

“I want to win that gold and the Sh3 million reward announced by the President. It will change my life and my child’s,”

she said, adding that she draws inspiration from Faith Kipyegon, the world 1500m record holder.

Bitok will compete in the women’s 800m and 1500m, alongside teammates Aidah Odero, Viola Chelimo, and Rebecca Matiko.

As the countdown to Tokyo continues, Sharon Bitok’s story embodies the heart of a true Kenyan champion — relentless, hopeful, and ready to make history.
